When Jeff and Cherisa Lewis got the call that HGTV wanted to feature their treehouse property, they were “over the moon.”
Then, they had to get to work.

The Flying Carpet Moroccan Treehouse

The couple’s treehouse vision was in the works for several years before officially opening in July 2023.
As they neared retirement age, the Lewis knew they wanted to open a rental property like a local bed & breakfast. But the theme behind this treehouse didn’t come along until a chance encounter while shopping.
Cherisa said they found salvaged doors and windows out of India, sparking the idea behind The Flying Carpet lodge.
The couple went on to find different pieces from India, Morocco, Turkey and Latvia, creating a destination with an international feel in Cullman, Alabama.
“We wanted to create a place where couples could come that would be over the top romantic, exotic and just the perfect getaway for couples without having to go to another country or out of their financial budget… we want them to have an experience they’ve never had.”
Cherisa Lewis
While they have never visited those countries, Cherisa said they did plenty of research to get the feel of the Eastern architecture, design and colors. She said they’ve gotten great responses from guests who have been across the globe.

While the treehouse has been listed on airbnb since 2023, there were several aspects that have been a work in progress over the years.
So when HGTV said they would be coming to town, the Lewis had three weeks to put the final touches on the property. Cherisa said major improvements were made.
“If we’re going to be on national television on HGTV, we need to go ahead and do the things we want to do. It’ll pay off.”

Wild Vacation Rentals on HGTV

HGTV debuted a new show called Wild Vacation Rentals, sending hosts Sherry Cola and D’Arcy Carden to highlight 22 different properties across the country.
The Cullman treehouse was one of three properties highlighted in the Southeast episode on HGTV this week.
And once the duo actually arrived at the location, they were not disappointed.
This really feels like we’re in another country.
Sherry Cola
The two raved about the international themes as they enjoyed an advanced travel package that included international food and massages.

They also spoke on the level of detail that went into the design from the doorways to the faucets.
“Every inch of this place is thought out.”
D’Arcy Carden
The two selected the Flying Carpet Treehouse as the top location from the episode, which you can stream in its entirety on HBO Max.
“We went from cozy to next level comfort… for the person who wants an international escape on a domestic budget and wants to be fed and pampered like a royal, who doesn’t want that.”
D’Arcy Carden

Jeff and Cherisa hosted a watch party at the treehouse when the episode aired on HGTV.
“It was a great experience. Being able to see all of the hard work and our dream come alive, seeing it on screen like that, it was unreal.”
Cherisa Lewis
Before the episode ended, Sherry Cola had a moment with one of the local owls, having a quick conversation with the permanent resident before leaving the property.
Cherisa said that was the highlight of the show for her. She also said they see plenty of other wildlife on the property including river otters in the nearby creek.
“The vibes here are honestly unmatched. Cultural, authentic and meaningful… worth it? Absolutely.”
