Demolition underway as Oxford revitalization project officially begins
Reading time: 2 minutes
If you have driven through downtown Oxford this week, there’s a good chance you either saw or heard some construction happening near Main Street in historic downtown.
There are nine sites that are on the demolition list, including spots on Choccolocco Street, Snow Street and Spring Street, which will officially begin the latest steps in the Oxford revitalization project. You can see a map of those sites labeled by blue pins below.
The demolition of these sites began Tuesday and is scheduled to end by June 1.
“This demolition project represents a pivotal moment for our community’s revitalization efforts, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the transformation of Historic Downtown Oxford. While it is with a sense of nostalgia that we bid farewell to these structures, their removal paves the way for exciting developments that will breathe new life into our beloved neighborhood, fostering growth, prosperity, and a renewed sense of community spirit.”
~ Oxford Mayor Alton Craft said in a statement released this week
What comes next?
The City of Oxford said it remains committed to preserving the history of the downtown area but health and safety concerns became an issue with some of the abandoned structures in the area. Clearing that space will allow the city to explore new opportunities for development.
One of the city’s biggest plans for the area is the addition of a new Alabama Children’s Museum. It’s expected to be just steps away from the Oxford Performing Arts Center and include hands-on exhibits and an explorer zone for outdoor enthusiasts.
The city also plans for the museum to be home to a School of Arts which will provide a learning space for students of all ages for:
- Dance
- Music
- Art
- Theatre
