Former Alabama high school star earns first All-Star Game selection

Just three years after making his major league debut, Brendan Donovan is set to make his first All-Star Game appearance.
Donovan, who played at Enterprise High School and the University of South Alabama, was selected as a reserve for next week’s game in Atlanta. He was the lone player from the St. Louis Cardinals to be selected to this year’s Midsummer Classic.

Brendan Donovan
Donovan made his debut with the Cardinals in 2022, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting and winning a Gold Glove award. He has become a utility player for the Cardinals but he is officially listed as a second baseman on the National League roster.
Last season, Donovan played a career-high 153 games including starring in last year’s MLB game at Rickwood Field where he hit a home run.
So far in 2025, Donovan is on pace for a career year at the plate. He currently holds a .296 batting average and an .806 OPS.
MLB All-Star week
A pair of minor league pitchers currently playing in Alabama have been selected for this year’s Futures Game.
Brody Hopkins will represent the Montgomery Biscuits while George Klassen was selected from the Rocket City Trash Pandas. That game is scheduled for this Saturday, July 12, at Truist Park.
Meanwhile, the Biscuits also have three former players who have had standout seasons at the major league level for the Tampa Bay Rays, earning a spot in this year’s All-Star Game including:
- Jonathan Aranda
- Junior Caminero
- Brandon Lowe
Caminero will also participate in the Home Run Derby, scheduled for Monday, July 14.
