Gas prices dip below $3 in Alabama, down $1.65 since June
Reading time: 2 minutes
For the first time in over a year, the average price at the pump in Alabama for a gallon of regular gas has dipped below $3 as of December 8, according to AAA Alabama.
The cheapest gas in Alabama can be found in Shelby, Colbert, Marshall, Etowah and Cherokee counties.
$1.65 Cent Drop Since June
Gas prices have been plummeting since the Thanksgiving holidays.
In a statement to The Bama Buzz, AAA Alabama spokesperson Clay Ingram described the current state of gas prices in Alabama.
“Our state average is below $3.00 per gallon for the first time in more than a year. We have dropped 31 cents in the past month and $1.65 since mid-June. Hopefully, prices will continue to drop through the end of January. This is a welcome sight for everyone planning to make a trip for the Christmas holidays”
Global demand is the primary cause for the drop in prices.
“It is dropping due to decreased global demand. U.S. demand is always dropping this time of year, but we are also seeing drops in other countries, especially China.” Ingram added.
Cheaper Than the Rest of U.S
Another bit of good news, the price for regular gas in Alabama is about 35 cents cheaper than the national rate which stands at $3.33. Gas taxes are a culprit. For example, the state taxes on a gallon of gas in California and Illinois is double that of Alabama.

Prices Vary
To help lower prices, AAA encourages drivers to shop around for the lowest prices.
For example, prices may vary 30-40 cents in some communities.
AAA actually has a mobile app that allows drivers to find gas stations with the lowest gas price within their vicinity. The app is free and can be used by non-AAA members and AAA members.
