Gulf State Park Pier being renovated following Hurricane Sally
Reading time: 2 minutes
In September 2020, Hurricane Sally tore through the Gulf Coast—including Gulf Shores State Park. Three years later, work is beginning to restore the park’s iconic, beautiful pier. Here’s what you need to know.
What happened during Hurricane Sally
Hurricane Sally landed at Gulf State Park as a category two storm on September 16, 2020. In the course of its time there, its strong winds and rains damaged several structures at Gulf State Park.
Of the wreckage, one of the most noticeable aspects was the collapse of a 200-foot portion of the pier.
What to expected during the Gulf State Park Pier renovations
At 5PM on November 12, the Gulf State Park Pier will close down, making way for renovations to begin. During renovations, expected to last until summer 2024, the pier will be closed.
“We are excited to announce this project to restore Gulf State Park Pier.
The pier provides quality recreational fishing for thousands of anglers each year. Once the work is completed, anglers and other park visitors will have full access to one of the premier fishing and sightseeing destinations on the Gulf Coast.”
Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR)
M.D. Thomas Construction, based in Orange Beach, will be completing the renovations.
