This week brought the biggest heat wave of the year to Alabama so far with several places reaching the high 80s Thursday afternoon.

Some cities even reached their record high including:

  • Montgomery: 87 (ties 2015)
  • Muscle Shoals: 87 (ties 1987)
  • Tuscaloosa: 87 (new record)

That may not be the end of the historic temperatures for the week though as the heat is expected to continue through Saturday. Some spots hitting 90 for the first time this year is not out of the question.

What’s next?

While the heat will stick around through most of the weekend, another stretch of cold temperatures is set to arrive across the state. Here’s a look at some of the forecasted lows for central Alabama for next week:

  • Sunday, April 6: 50
  • Monday, April 7: 40
  • Tuesday, April 8: 36
  • Wednesday, April 9: 44

There is a low-end chance of reaching record lows in some spots on Tuesday but it’s not likely.

When the temperatures shift, there is a chance of severe weather impacting areas across Alabama late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Make sure to keep an eye on your local meteorologist + the National Weather Service social media channels for the latest updates.
