It’s been just under four years since Hurricane Sally smacked the Gulf Coast, toppling pecan trees in Baldwin County, stopping the fountain in downtown Mobile’s Bienville Square and destroying some cabins along Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park.

While Bienville Square isn’t open just yet, 17 cabins along Lake Shelby have been replaced with 20 brand-new cabins. Keep reading for all the details + some insight on when hurricane-damaged Gulf State Park Pier will reopen.

The 20 cabins, unveiled yesterday, are the product of a nearly $9M investment to make the best of hurricane damage by revamping areas around the park. The cabins have two bedrooms + a bunkroom, a living area, a kitchenette + include amenities like:

  • Direct lake access
  • Fully furnished cabins
  • Laundry room
  • Picnic tables + BBQ grill
  • Screened porches
  • WiFi

You can add a kitchen package to get all set up for all your meals – stove, microwave + all your utensils.

“We’re committed to creating a first-class guest experience at every state park, and these gorgeous cabins definitely deliver on that promise. It’s rewarding to see these cabins looking better than ever.”

Chris Blankenship, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner

Two of the new cabins are fully ADA-compliant. The addition of these cabins brings the total number of cabins at Gulf State Park to 30.

More renovations at Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park Pier was particularly wrecked by Hurricane Sally, a 200-foot stretch of it was wiped out. Renovations began back in November, closing the pier for the winter.

It’s expected that these will wrap up just in time for the summer beach months—so much so, the city’s Fourth of July Celebration is scheduled to be at the pier once more.
