Adding on to the continuously growing electric vehicle fleet in Alabama, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) plans to begin building the hybrid Santa Fe Sport along with the first all-electric Genesis GV70 SUV at their Montgomery factory. Read on for more details.
Alabama’s going electric
The Drive Electric Alabama initiative is in full swing and it’s no secret that electric vehicles are making waves throughout the state. Hot off the heels of Mercedes-Benz’s new all-electric Alabama-made SUV, Hyundai is joining the party with their own electric additions.
At its only US manufacturing center in Montgomery, Hyundai plans to invest $300 million and create 200 jobs to accommodate the growth of the project.
“Over the years, we have developed an enduring partnership with Hyundai, and it’s been great to witness the profound economic impacts of the company’s continued investments in Alabama. Hyundai’s new growth plans in Montgomery will help prepare the state’s auto industry for the EV revolution while also aligning with our strategic initiatives such as Drive Electric Alabama.”
Gov. Kay Ivey
To support electric vehicle production, HMMA will begin several plant expansion projects, from creating additional warehouse space to enhancing the assembly process.
Montgomery officials praised Hyundai for its strong support of the Alabama manufacturing plant.
“Hyundai and Montgomery have a powerful partnership. We look forward to continuing to strengthen this relationship in the coming years and working to support this tremendous investment.”
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed
Meet the fleet
Beginning later this year, the Santa Fe Hybrid and the Electrified GV70 will roll off the assembly line in Montgomery.
To date, Hyundai has invested $1.8 billion in the Alabama operation, which currently employs over 3,200 full-time workers.
The Electrified GV70 is a luxury electric SUV that boasts a bold design, new driver-oriented technologies and powerful vehicle performance. The Santa Fe Hybrid combines the best of SUV versatility with MPG efficiency.
They’ll join the Elantra sedan, Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs and the Santa Cruz Sport adventure vehicle on the Montgomery assembly line.
Looking to get behind the wheel? The 2023 Electrified GV70 will arrive in US dealerships next year and the 2022 Santa Fe Hybrid is currently available at all US Hyundai dealerships.
“Hyundai Motor Company is taking its first steps in electric vehicle production in the United States. We are excited to showcase our team members’ skills in producing electric vehicles here in Alabama.”
