The latest project to bring some traffic relief to beachgoers and local residents is officially completed.

The Alabama Department of Transportation has fully opened the new traffic pattern for the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge in Gulf Shores.

The one-way bridge is designed to improve travel between the Beach Express, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan.

“ALDOT appreciates the patience and cooperation shown by residents, visitors and local businesses throughout this project. The goal of this project is to create a safer, smoother and more reliable route for everyone traveling to and from Alabama’s beaches.”

James Gordon, spokesperson for ALDOT’s Southwest Region

How the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge helps traffic flow

The project is designed to support long-term traffic needs along Alabama’s Gulf Coast while improving mobility during peak travel periods. The traffic pattern will include:

  • Two southbound lanes across the new ICW Bridge
  • Two northbound lanes across the former toll bridge
  • The new north roundabout and SR 161 connector roadway

ALDOT hopes this project will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion during busy beach travel seasons. + support continued growth along the state’s coast.

Motorists should continue using caution while traveling through the area as crews complete remaining minor work items and final cleanup activities.
