Mobile named one of 24 top places to go in 2024 by Condé Nast Traveler
Reading time: 3 minutes
Condé Nast Traveler, one of America’s most popular travel magazines, has included Mobile on its list of 24 places to go in North America in 2024.
Thanks to a recent annexation vote that added several neighborhoods to the Port City’s numbers, Alabama’s 2nd largest city is on a roll.
What makes 2024 stand out as a place to go?
Condé Nast Traveler listed three reasons:
Amtrak service resumes
Even though it took a while to happen, Condé Nast Traveler is excited to see Mobile reconnect with New Orleans via Amtrak’s new Gulf Coast service. The publication reminds us it’s not just the Crescent City that benefits from this new route, but also the “string of charming Mississippi towns in between.”
We can’t wait to see trains arriving downtown from New Orleans during Mardi Gras, so revelers can see firsthand the birthplace of the month-long event.
While the new train service is fantastic, let’s also not forget that 2024 marks the first full year of Carnival Cruises’ return too!
Clotilda Exhibition and new Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District
Another reason to visit Mobile in 2024 according to Condé Nast Traveler is because several new civil rights and African American history sites are coming to fruition in 2024, including the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park. The park is also part of the in-development Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District.
Back in July 2023, Clotilda: The Exhibition opened, detailing the story of America’s last slave ship and the community that grew out of it: Africatown.
The history of the community continues to receive national attention. This month CBS’s 60 Minutes Anderson Cooper updated his story about the community.
The Admiral reopens
Along with the new sites and transportation venues, one of downtown Mobile’s grandest hotels—The Admiral—is slated to reopen in early 2024. Former guests over the years included Elvis Presley and Bob Hope. The Admiral is the perfect location if you are seeking to go “all in” during Mardi Gras season.

This isn’t the first time an Alabama city has made the Condé Nast Traveler sneak peek list for tourists. In 2022, Birmingham was chosen.
