Keep reading for the literary and historical significance that bubbled Monroeville to the top of WorldAtlas’ list.
What WorldAtlas had to say about Monroeville
The hometown of renowned authors Truman Capote and Harper Lee is chock full of history—much of it to do with the writers.
You can take a historic walking tour, which will take you through the Old Courthouse Museum, a landmark site in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Or stop by the Old Monroe County Jail, which partially inspired Capote’s In Cold Blood.
“This bustling downtown is chock full of history and inspirational structures, making it one of the best in the South.”

And it makes sense that Monroeville’s vibrant Main Street drew the eye of WorldAtlas editors—Main Street America picked the town as one of its Great American Main Street Award recipients back in May.
If you’re not much of a reader, the downtown strip is sure to have a little shop you’ll enjoy.
“The 40-acre downtown area revolves around the courthouse square and includes several architectural styles like Modern and Classical Revival.”
