The city of Montgomery has launched a $6 million initiative to clean up blighted commercial properties. Their first project? Demolition of the former Governor’s House Hotel & Convention Center.

Once-popular Montgomery convention site

Built in 1965, the hotel was once a popular destination for conventions in the Capital City. The space was known for its swimming pool built in the shape of the state of Alabama.

Other amenities included:

  • 197 guest rooms
  • Meeting and convention space
  • 9-hole golf course
  • Horse-back riding stables
  • Restaurant and lounge

“This property has been abandoned for some time. It is just one of several properties that we have identified as part of a comprehensive commercial demolition plan.”

Marcus Dean, Chief Building Official, Montgomery

The old convention center sprawled across 65,608 square feet. It will cost an estimated $279,000 to tear down and remove the debris from the site.

The city has set aside $6 million to demolish blighted commercial properties in an effort to reinvigorate business districts and neighborhoods.
