Earvin “Magic” Johnson is headed to our state next month as the NBA Hall of Famer is scheduled to give a pair of commencement speeches at Alabama HBCUs.

Johnson will be the keynote speaker for graduation ceremonies at Stillman College and Tuskegee University. Both events are scheduled for May 9.

The legendary basketball player has made several previous visits to the state, maybe most notably to the Huntsville area where his wife Cookie grew up.

Stillman College

Stillman College is celebrating 150 years as an institution in 2026 and they have pulled the international star to help them celebrate commencement weekend in May.

“A legend, visionary and builder of legacy by transforming communities through business and philanthropy. His impact speaks far beyond his NBA career. On May 9, that impact meets purpose—right here at Stillman. Class of 2026, this one’s for you. Walk boldly. Lead intentionally. Leave your mark.”

The commencement speech is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 9 at 9AM.

Tuskegee University

After speaking in Tuscaloosa, Johnson will have to make the quick trip to Tuskegee where he will speak at the Tigers graduation at 12:30PM.

Johnson is scheduled to address more than 300 undergraduate students in Chappie James Arena on campus

“We are excited about hosting such an exceptional leader and visionary and look forward to how Magic Johnson outlines a path for our students to use what they’ve learned at Tuskegee to navigate a swiftly changing world. We expect this to be a lesson in business and entrepreneurship as well as a lesson in life. There will be something for everyone, regardless of their career path.”

Dr. Mark A. Brown, President at Tuskegee University

The university said this is a ticketed event. There will be overflow seating in Logan Hall and the University Chapel. Instructions for parking and shuttle services will be shared on the Commencement webpage.
