Reading time: 1 minute
There is a new adorable face at the Montgomery Zoo. Appa is the first baby bison to be born there, and zookeepers are thrilled he made a healthy entrance to the world.
Keep reading for all the details on baby Appa!
Born May 26, 2024
Zookeepers say Appa’s mom, Sakari, gave birth to him on May 26. He was released into the enclosure with the rest of his bison buddies on the 10th of this month.
Sakari (11) was matched with Appa’s dad, Tank (22) as part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP), working to preserve bison populations through breeding.
“We are so excited to watch him grow up and explore his habitat.”

As for his personality, keepers say he’s fun and curious. He gets the “zoomies” and runs around his parents before flopping over onto a bed of hay for an impromptu nap.
