The American Institute of Architects Alabama Design Awards Merit Award
The historic City Federal Building in Montgomery, Alabama underwent a huge transformation before welcoming Ravello Ristorante in 2022. The architectural genius behind it? Pfeffer Torode Architecture.
This renowned team of architects and designers is based in Nashville, but they have studios in Birmingham and Montgomery.
When they took on the City Federal project, they applied the thoughtful, experimental design that they’re known for—and the esults are phenomenal. Here’s what they had to say about the project in a recent Instagram post:
“The original bank, built in 1926 in the classical Beaux Arts style, consisted of a center bay flanked by two smaller wings. After years of neglect, only the north wing remained. The development team acquired this building, along with its two nondescript neighbors, and transformed the three into one of the city’s finest culinary experiences—Ravello Ristorante—along with an additional event space and offices. With hopes that Ravello can serve as inspiration for future rejuvenation projects in the Capitol of Dreams, the restoration of this trio of urban buildings successfully blends history and art with modern amenities and showcases a commitment to preserving our city’s heritage.”

It’s a success indeed. The project just won them the American Institute of Architects Alabama Merit Award, a distinction that’s well-deserved.
