Less than a year after breaking ground, a new two-acre pocket park has officially opened at Lewis Landing in Africatown.

The community held an event last month to celebrate the opening. The park also unveiled a new plaque to honor and educate the history of Africatown.

“Founded by the newly freed survivors of the Clotilda, Africatown is now part of a global network of remembrance across the African diaspora, honoring the lives of those who survived one of the darkest moments in history and created a community that continues to celebrate and preserve their legacies.”

Rep. Shomari Figures

The park is located at 1365 Conception Street Road on the banks of Threemile Creek. It’s less than 10 minutes from the Africatown Heritage House which was recently named the second best history museum in the country by USA Today.

The new pocket park includes a plaque that is one of just 52 across the entire country.

The plaque was built to honor the 2 million captive Africans who died during the Trans-Atlantic Crossing known as the Middle Passage and the 10 million who survived.

Africatown in Mobile

There are several pieces of history to explore in the area. Africatown is home to:

  • Heritage House museum
  • Lewis Landing
  • Lewis Quarters
  • Clotilda exhibit

The area has received national + international praise in recent years as the city continues its push for preserving the historic site.

When it opened in 2023, it was called the top new museum in the country by National Geographic UK.

There will soon be a new visitors center that officially broke ground in 2025.
