NEW: State-of-the-art regional sports complex coming to Oneonta
Oneonta, located about 45 minutes northeast of Birmingham, announced some exciting news on Tuesday, October 10. The old agribusiness property is being transformed into a state-of-the-art regional sports complex. Here’s what you need to know.
The new Oneonta regional sports complex
The Blount County Economic Development (BCEDC), along with the Blount County Commission and private contributors, is moving quickly. Within 90 days, Oneonta will break ground on the new complex, which will include facilities for:
- Basketball
- Volleyball
- Pickleball
- Soccer
The space will also include meeting spaces, making the project a hub for the community.

Other new recreation developments across Alabama
Oneonta isn’t the only city getting a big new recreation development, though. Several have been announced across the state in recent times:
- The Fields at 17 Springs will bring tennis courts, pickleball courts and multipurpose fields to Millbrook.
- The new Cullman Sports and Events Complex will include dozens of sports fields and courts, a water park and an events center.
- Samford University in Birmingham recently announced a new Campus Recreation, Wellness and Athletic Complex.
