Samford Athletic Complex among new high-dollar building permits

This past week, 11 new building permits were issued in Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of those new building permits, five are for projects in North Alabama, while three are in the Birmingham metro area, including a $55 million project at Samford University.

Here’s what we know about these new building permits:

The largest permit on the list for this week is for the new Campus Recreation, Wellness and Athletic Complex at Samford University. The project, headed by Hoar Construction, is the largest capital project on the Samford Campus in the history of the university.

Here are some details on the project:

  • It encompasses four projects totaling 165,000 square feet. 
  • Seibert Hall will be renovated to include two basketball courts, multi-use court, studios for fitness classes, dance studios, multi-purpose workout area and common spaces. 
  • An additional 20,000-square-foot adjacent building will be constructed featuring recreation and event space.
  • Bashinsky Field House will be renovated to house new training and practice spaces.
  • The first floor of Dwight and Lucille Beeson Center has been renovated to serve as the new home for the university’s health center and counseling services. 
  • The Bashinsky and Seibert renovations and Seibert addition are expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
