Smucker’s plant one of 23 new building permits issued for million-dollar-plus projects

This week, 23 new building permits were issued throughout the state for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these new building permits, eight of them are for the new Smucker’s plant in Jefferson County — totaling more than $400 million.

Here’s what we know about these new high-dollar construction projects in Alabama:

Smuckers ‘Uncrustables’ plant in Jefferson County

The J.M. Smucker Co. announced plans to build a new $1.1 billion manufacturing and distribution facility for Uncrustables sandwiches in McCalla nearly two years ago. The plant is the third in the country dedicated solely to the company’s Uncrustables brand.

According to the Birmingham Business Alliance, this is one of the largest economic development projects to come to Jefferson County in the past several years, both in terms of capital investment and jobs.

Here are some quick facts about the new plant:

  • The construction has been planned in three phases, with this latest being the second phase.
  • The new facility will be housed at the JeffMet Industrial Complex at 7351 Old Tulscaloosa Highway.
  • The facility will create up to 750 jobs.
  • Construction began in 2022, with production commencing in calendar year 2025.
  • The Dennis Group out of Springfield, Mass., is listed as the contractor
  • The Smucker’s Uncrustables brand has existing facilities in Kentucky and Colorado.
