For the first time in program history, the North Alabama men’s basketball team has clinched a share of its regular season conference championship at the Division I level.

The Lions defeated Queens (NC), 74-69, at home Wednesday night to finish the regular season with a 22-9 overall record + a 14-4 mark in Atlantic Sun play. That mark in conference play puts UNA in a tie with Lipscomb for first place in the conference.

Keep reading to see what comes next for the Lions + how they can secure their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

A-Sun men’s basketball conference tournament

The Lions are just three wins away from making their first ever appearance in the big dance. That run will have to start Monday, March 3 in Florence.

Despite splitting the two regular season meetings, Lipscomb holds the tiebreaker over the Lions which pushes North Alabama to the 2 seed for the conference tournament. The A-Sun conference has the higher-seeded team host each game in the final three rounds so the Lions will start their postseason at Flowers Hall.

UNA has a bye to the quarterfinals and will first play the winner of the first round matchup between Austin Peay and North Florida. Here’s the full schedule for the tournament:

  • Sunday, March 2
  • #7 Austin Peay vs. #8 North Florida in Florence – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • #9 Stetson vs. #10 Central Arkansas in Nashville – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • Monday, March 3
  • Austin Peay/North Florida at #2 North Alabama – 6 PM CT (ESPN+)
  • #6 Queens at #3 FGCU – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • #5 EKU at #4 Jacksonville – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • Stetson/Central Arkansas at #1 Lipscomb – 7 PM CT (ESPN+)
  • Thursday, March 6
  • Semifinal 1 – Time TBA (ESPN+)
  • Semifinal 2 – Time TBA (ESPN+)
  • Sunday, March 9
  • Championship Game – 2 PM ET (ESPN2)

The tournament will be reseeded ahead of the semifinals with the two highest remaining seeds hosting.

If UNA wins its quarterfinal game, it will guarantee the team at least one more home game. The Lions would also host any team other than Lipscomb if they make it to the championship.
