Pro sports season in Alabama isn’t over: What to know + how to watch
Reading time: 4 minutes
There is certainly plenty of attention surrounding the professional sports teams across Alabama during the summer.
Our minor league baseball teams made national headlines in 2024, our UFL team is in the middle of a dynasty and our soccer clubs are growing. But once those leagues hit the offseason, there are still other pro teams to support.
Keep reading to find out more about three Alabama teams in action over the next few months.
Birmingham Squadron
This will be the fourth season in Birmingham for the New Orleans Pelicans G-League team. The Squadron made the playoffs in its inaugural season but have finished well below .500 in the last two seasons.
One of this year’s biggest draws for fans may be former UAB star Trey Jemison, who is on a two-way contract with the Pelicans. While he will spend some time in the NBA this year, he will likely see some games in Birmingham where he will get plenty of minutes on the court.
Some other names to watch on the 2024-25 roster includes:
- Elfrid Payton, NBA veteran
- Brandon Boston Jr., former Kentucky star
- Trhae Mitchell, former South Alabama star
- Keion Brooks Jr., former Washington star
Head over to the team’s website to buy single-game tickets. The Squadron play its home games at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.
Birmingham Bulls
When professional hockey returned to the Pelham Civic Center in 2017, there never a question about fans showing up. But the response from the city has been even more than anyone could have imagined—and if you haven’t been to a game yet, we recommend going ASAP… and probably getting there earlier than you think you need to.
Last season, the Bulls finished first in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) but could not make it out of the first round of the playoffs. In 2023, Birmingham made it to the championship round but lost in the best-of-3 series.
Through seven games of the 2024-25 season, the Bulls sit in third place in the league. Check out their full schedule and roster for this season and buy tickets for upcoming games in Pelham.
Huntsville Havoc
Another team in the SPHL is the Huntsville Havoc, a much more established franchise that has been playing in the league since 2004. The Havoc has three league titles to its name with the last one coming back in 2019.
Huntsville fell in the championship round last season but has had a quick start to the new year, winning five of its first eight games to sit in second place in the league.
As always, some of the biggest games to watch throughout the season will be when the Havoc and Bulls meet. On gamedays, the rivalry feels more like an Alabama-Auburn game.
Huntsville defeated Birmingham in overtime in the season opener. Here’s the other dates to remember throughout the rest of the season:
- Bulls at Havoc, Nov. 28
- Bulls at Havoc, Nov. 29
- Havoc at Bulls, Jan. 20
- Havoc at Bulls, Feb. 17
- Havoc at Bulls, Feb. 28
- Bulls at Havoc, March 1
The Havoc plays at the Von Braun Center in downtown Huntsville. Get tickets for all of their home games on their website.
