Between April 25th and 28th, 2011, the South was rocked by a series of catastrophic tornados during the 2011 Super Outbreak. The community of Cullman, Alabama experienced some of the worst damage during the outbreak; an EF4 tornado tore through the down, with wind speeds as high as 175MPH along its 47-mile damage route. Cullman lost 6 members of the community, while more than 48 others suffered injuries.
To help raise funds for the disaster relief, several locals organized the very first Rock the South. On April 27, 2012—one year after the disastrous tornado—15,000 people turned out for the first Rock the South, featuring country stars Dierks Bentley and Kellie Pickler. Since then, dozens of the biggest names in country music—like Florida-Georgia Line, Alan Jackson, Thomas Rhett, Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more—have headlined at Rock the South.
Although Rock the South was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival is back and better than ever.
