After the track and field at Memorial Stadium in Selma took major damage from storms in 2020 and 2023, the city and its school district made a plan to not just repair but upgrade the facility.
Selma used a $750,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) to make the upgrades. The Ralph “Shug” Jordan Track & Field is now up to standard to host AHSAA competitions.
“This facility stands as a testament to what can be accomplished through collaboriation, dedication and vision. I’m proud to have played a role in bringing this project to fruition for the benefit of our community. We took our time and did it the right way.”
James Perkins Jr., Selma Mayor
According to a report from the Selma Sun, Perkins has also stated the need for upgrades to the stadium surrounding the upgraded track.

- Running
- Long jump/triple jump
- Steeplechase
- Javelin
- Shotput
- Discus
“Wednesday marked an outstanding day for the City of Selma! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the new Ralph Shug Jordan Track and Field a reality, providing a wonderful space for the children of the Selma City School District to thrive and enjoy.”
