Birmingham welcomed eight teams and their fanbases for the NCAA Women’s Tournament this year. And before it was all said and done, two teams secured their place in the 2025 Final Four in Tampa.
There were six games across four days with the weekend concluding Monday night.
South Carolina topped Duke in the first regional final on Sunday in front of a crowd of more than 11,000 people. An all-Texas battle wrapped up the weekend as top-seed Texas took down TCU.
NCAA Tournament in Birmingham
Birmingham has now hosted both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the last three years. And Legacy Arena will host the men’s first and second rounds again in 2028.
The city and the crowd certainly left a positive impression on at least one coach.
“First, I just want to thank the Birmingham region and all the people that poured into this regional site. Everybody felt welcome, from our hotel to just walking around the street, to being in this arena. It really felt welcoming to our game.”
Dawn Staley, South Carolina coach
Immediately after the game, Staley, who is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and has already won three titles with the Gamecocks, thanked the crowd at Legacy Arena for helping put women’s basketball on the map.
