Reading time: 3 minutes
It’s officially Super Bowl week and even if you’re not a fan of the matchup, almost everyone will be choosing a side by Sunday evening.
The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the big game for the second time in three years. Here’s what you need to know:
- What: Super Bowl LIX
- When: 5:30PM | Sunday, Feb. 9
- Where: Caesars Superdome | 1500 Sugar Bowl Dr, New Orleans, LA 70112
- Watch: FOX
And if you’re looking for a reason to root for (or against) either side, both teams have players with connections to the state of Alabama. Keep reading to see the list for both teams.
Philadelphia Eagles
The connection between Alabama and Philadelphia has certainly been strong in recent years, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver DeVonta Smith who certainly get most of the attention.
But the Crimson Tide pipeline to the City of Brotherly Love does not end there. Here’s a list of former Alabama players with a chance to win a ring with the Eagles:
- Landon Dickerson, left guard
- Jalen Hurts, quarterback
- Cameron Latu, tight end (future/reserve)
- Eli Ricks, cornerback
- Devonta Smith, wide receiver
- Tyler Steen, offensive guard
- Byron Young, nose tackle (injured reserve)
But the team’s connections to our state does not end in Tuscaloosa. The Birds are loaded with even more Alabama talent from veteran starters to the practice squad.
The rest of the list includes:
- Reed Blankenship, safety, West Limestone HS
- Khari Blasingame, fullback, Buckhorn HS
- James Bradberry IV, defensive back, Samford + Pleasant Grove HS (injured reserve)
- Jack Driscoll, offensive lineman, Auburn (injured reserve)
- Bryce Huff, defensive end, Saint Paul’s
- Nicholas Morrow, linebacker, Huntsville HS
- CJ Uzomah, tight end, Auburn (injured reserve)
Kansas City Chiefs
For those hoping to see a Super Bowl three-peat this weekend, you may not have as many Alabama roots to cheer for.
But there are certainly some state ties to the Chiefs roster.
Three members of the practice squad will stay ready in case their names are called, including:
- Chris Oladokun, quarterback, Samford
- Montrell Washington, wide receiver, Samford
- Justyn Ross, wide receiver, Central-Phenix City
Linebacker Drue Tranquill (Montgomery) and running back Samaje Perine (Jackson) were both born in Alabama. Both of those players will likely see plenty of playing time Sunday.
