Only one place in Alabama is among the “World’s Greatest.” At least, if you ask TIME Magazine.

I’ll give you a few hints:

  • It’s one of three facilities of its kind in the U.S.
  • Some U.S. Olympic Trials were hosted here
  • It’s only been open for a year

If you guessed Montgomery Whitewater, you get a gold star! If you didn’t, keep reading and I’ll tell you all about its latest honor from TIME Magazine.

Nestled among idyllic beach resorts in Thailand and culinary art museums on TIME’s list of “World’s Greatest Places” is Alabama’s Montgomery Whitewater.

“We are thrilled and honored to be included in such a prestigious roundup, surrounded by so many extraordinary destinations worldwide. We share this accolade with the partners and leaders who envisioned the park, our staff and the community that has embraced this big idea to make life better through an active outdoor lifestyle.”

Out of 100 total “World’s Greatest” locations, the list was split into two—places to stay and places to visit. Montgomery Whitewater rounds out the more experiential side of things, joining the ranks of wildlife preserves in Kenya and ancient Roman bathhouses.

“[T]he facility opened in July 2023 with a mission to make outdoor activities and healthy lifestyles accessible to everyone. (Admission is free for visitors just looking to enjoy the green spaces, walking paths, and rollicking whitewater views.)”

Despite being open for just over a year, Montgomery Whitewater has already cemented itself as a landmark. The U.S. Olympic Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross teams were formed there in April.

“Montgomery Whitewater is more than a local treasure — it is an outdoor recreation resource that adds a new dimension to our strategic economic development efforts on a statewide level.”

Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce
