The city of Daphne has become Alabama’s 3rd Bee City USA.

A project of the The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, a  “Bee City” commits to the following initiatives:

  • Create and enhance pollinator habitat on public and private land by increasing the abundance of native plants and providing nest sites
  • Reduce the use of pesticides
  • Incorporate pollinator-conscious practices into city policies and plans
  • Host pollinator awareness events

“Through education and awareness, the Daphne City Council and I understand the importance of sustaining pollinators, and want to make the city more pollinator friendly.

Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune

Daphne is Alabama’s third Bee City. The first two Bee City communities in the state are Mountain Brook and Pelham.

Why becoming a Bee City matters

According to Bee City USA, pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies and hummingbirds, and many others are responsible for the reproduction of almost ninety percent of the world’s flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we consume.

Presently, there are 229 Bee City USA affiliates nationwide.
