World Atlas, the popular educational geography website released last month its list of the six most overlooked towns in the southern U.S.

One town in Alabama made the list. Can you guess it? Here are some clues.

  • It is home to the only National Park unit in Alabama dedicated to a natural area
  • It once held the title “Sock Capital of the World”
  • One of Country Music’s greatest bands calls it home

If you answered Fort Payne, you are correct.

The good folks at World Atlas are right when they say Fort Payne is overlooked.

From their story:

“Fort Payne is a small town in Alabama full of natural beauty, from mountain trails to cascading waterfalls, it is a town not to miss.”

If there was an Alabama bucket list, seeing Little River Canyon in the Fall when the leaves change would be on the top.

Second on the bucket list — attending June Jam in Fort Payne, the newly revised music festival organized by the Country Music Supergroup and local hometown heroes—Alabama.

Who else made the World Atlas overlooked Southern towns list?

  • Crystal River, Florida
  • Rogersville, Tennessee
  • Helen Georgia
  • Black Mountain, North Carolina
  • Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

World Atlas might think Fort Payne is overlooked, but it sure is a supporter of Fort Payne and the nearby communities. Last year it named Desoto State Park one of the best places to visit in the Fall

It also made their “quirkiest town” list.

Did World Atlas get it right by choosing Fort Payne? Who do you think is Alabama’s most overlooked town?
