When Toyota announced 2022 Toyota Tundra, they stated that the newest generation of their heavy-duty pickup was redesigned from the ground up—including the engine. Starting with the 2022 model, the 5.7L V-8 engine that had become standard on the Toyota Tundra will be phased out in favor of Toyota’s new i-FORCE MAX 3.5-liter Twin-Turbo V-6 engine.

According to Toyota, the new Twin-Turbo V-6 will produce 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. In addition, the new Toyota Tundra will have a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds, and a maximum payload of 1,940 pounds.

Thinking about buying a 2022 Toyota Tundra? If you do, you can drive confidently knowing that your vehicle’s engine was manufactured right here in Alabama. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. (TMMAL), located near Huntsville, will be the exclusive North American producer of the new Twin-Turbo V-6 engine. Now, don’t confuse TMMAL with the upcoming Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc plant, which is also located near Huntsville.

As of 2020, TMMAL was responsible for roughly one-third of all Toyota engines manufactured in the United States. Now that they’ll be the sole North American producer of the Twin-Turbo V-6, TMMAL plans to produce 900,000 engines a year—a 35% increase.

In order to meet this demand, Toyota is looking to hire 450 new employees at their TMMAL plant, bringing the total employment up to 1,800.
