Trio of repeat champions crowned during AHSAA volleyball state championships

The final day of October was also the final day of the 2024 high school volleyball season. Three more champions were crowned Thursday, capping off a busy week at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

A total of 56 teams converged on the Crossplex earlier this week as each of the seven classifications from the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) watched their Elite Eight dwindle down to one champion.

There were quite a few sweeps during championship week. Here’s a quick look at the final matches from each classification:

  • 7A: McGill-Toolen def. Bob Jones, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 24-26, 15-13
  • 6A: Spanish Fort def. Pelham, 25-21, 26-24, 25-19
  • 5A: UMS Wright def. Faith Academy, 25-15, 25-16, 25-21
  • 4A: Prattville Christian def. Alexandria, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19
  • 3A: Mobile Christian def. Ohatchee, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18
  • 2A: Pleasant Valley def. Lindsay Lane, 25-18, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23
  • 1A: Spring Garden def. University Charter, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22

McGill-Toolen grabbed its third consecutive state championship in 7A. Pleasant Valley and Spring Garden also defended their crowns from last season.

Spanish Fort did not drop a set in Birmingham, sweeping Hazel Green and Chelsea before taking down Pelham in the championship. The Toros finished with 60 wins this season.

MVP Performances

It’s pretty much impossible to do anything by yourself on the volleyball court but there’s still times where you need to recognize individual performances. Here’s a list of the athletes that took home some extra hardware along with their team’s blue map:

  • 6A: Taylor Ishmael, Spanish Fort
  • 5A: Josie Jaye, UMS Wright
  • 4A: Emma Cate Carter, Prattville Christian
  • 3A: Melaina Haines, Mobile Christian
  • 2A: Lily Henry, Pleasant Valley
  • 1A: Ace Austin, Spring Garden
