Tuscaloosa County school shutting down athletics program
Reading time: 2 minutes

Holt High School in Tuscaloosa County will have to shut down all varsity athletic programs after the 2025-26 school year, according to a letter sent to parents this week.
The Tuscaloosa County Board of Education made the decision, citing “steadily declining participation rates and the financial unsustainability.”
The full message to parents also said Holt students will have the opportunity to continue their athletic careers at Brookwood High School or Tuscaloosa County High School.
Those student-athletes can decide whether they want to attend school at Holt and compete at those schools or take classes at one of those two options, based on where they live.
“We want to give our student athletes the best opportunity for success. This decision is motivated by what is in the best interest of our current and future students. Club sports and extracurricular activities will remain at Holt High School.”

Reactions were all over social media as soon as the news became public.
The Tuscaloosa County School System will hold a public meeting on Monday, Feb. 10 to discuss the decision and future opportunities still happening at the school.
“Please join us Monday, February 10, at 6 pm in the Holt High Café, for a discussion on possible new course offerings and opportunities for Holt High students. This meeting will be an opportunity for Holt High and Tuscaloosa County School System leaders to share ideas with and get feedback from students and families. Because we will be discussing ways to shape the future of Holt High, we encourage Davis-Emerson students and families to attend the meeting.”
