The U.S. Postal Service released this week the Hank Aaron stamp during a ceremony at Truist Park in Atlanta.

50 years ago, “Hammerin’ Hank,” a Mobile native, surpassed Babe Ruth’s home run record. The new forever stamp celebrates his success on the baseball diamond and his work to champion equality, according to Thomas Marshall, the Postal Service’s general counsel and executive vice president.

Hank Aaron’s baseball legacy

Along with hitting the second most home runs in history, Aaron still holds the following all-time Major League records nearly 46 years after his retirement:

  • 1st in RBIs — 2.297
  • 1st in extra-base hits —1,477
  • 1st in total bases — 6,856
  • 3rd in hits —3,771

One of the most consequential figures in American history, in January 2021 Aaron passed away.

“I’m deeply grateful for this phenomenal recognition the United States Postal Service has bestowed upon my beloved husband, Henry Louis Aaron. I hope that his stamp will inspire a new generation to remember Henry for his incredible grace and determination in the face of tremendous opposition. Henry will live on forever in our hearts and minds, and to have a stamp prominently bear his likeness is an honor fitting the wonderful man we love so dearly.”
