Plastered on the side of a small brick building in Brewton, Alabama, are the intriguing words, “Drexell & Honeybee’s Donations Only Restaurant.” This popular restaurant with 5 stars on Google is anything but conventional, and it’s drawn national attention with a feature on the TODAY Show. Keep reading for all the details.
The TODAY Show feature
The TODAY Feature, titled “Alabama restaurant runs on donations to feed those in need,” features an interview with Lisa and Fred McMillan, the husband-and-wife team who founded Drexell & Honeybee’s.
“I just wanted do something to show people that money does not make the world go round.
Everybody should have a right to go into a restaurant and have a meal and not worry about paying.”
Lisa McMillan, cofounder, Drexell & Honeybee’s (TODAY Show)
The feature showcased the story of Drexell & Honeybee’s—from its conceptualization when everyone thought Lisa and Fred were “crazy” to its daily lunch rush six years later. Lisa spoke of how hard the work is, since everything they do is homemade. However, it’s a passion of hers that comes from her own history with food insecurity.
The feature also spotlighted how much of a community has developed at Drexell & Honeybee’s, bringing together people to tell stories and support one another. The donation box, which is in a private spot of the restaurant, is also highlighted on the show—with photos of heartfelt, handwritten notes that often come with donations large and small.
