The University of Alabama is creating a new School of Leadership and Policy program with classes set to begin in fall 2027.
The new school was approved by the university Board of Trustees last week. Alabama said it believes the new school will build on the Capstone’s storied history of educating effective civic leaders and policymakers who have shaped the state of Alabama and the nation.
“The University of Alabama’s new School of Leadership and Policy will instill the qualities of ethical leadership, innovative thinking and evidence-based policymaking to shape the trajectory of communities across Alabama and the United States… By cultivating leadership talent and policy expertise, the School of Leadership and Policy will serve as a catalyst for developing the next generation of changemakers — those who will lead Alabama and the nation toward a prosperous and resilient future.”
Peter J. Mohler, UA President
The university made the announcement with some help from UA graduate and US Senator Katie Britt.
The university says the new school will provide interdisciplinary, practice-oriented education that prepares students of all backgrounds to become effective policymakers and public servants.
Curriculum is expected to expose students to multiple viewpoints and engage directly with a wide range of other public institutions, nonprofits and the private sector. It will offer internships, policy labs and community-based projects.
“Through rigorous interdisciplinary studies rooted in the foundational principles of American democracy, The University of Alabama’s School of Leadership and Policy will educate and empower our students to become effective and principled leaders equipped to improve lives across Alabama and beyond. I am very excited for the role this school will play in the future of our state and nation.”
Sid J. Trant, UA System Chancellor
The new school has four main priorities listed on its website including:
- Educational excellence: Develop curriculum that combines theoretical foundations with practical policy application
- Leadership development: Equip students with the skills, knowledge and ethical grounding necessary for leadership roles in public service
- Service and impact: Establish strong partnerships with local, state and federal agencies to promote civic engagement and public service
- Economic development: Contribute to the state’s economic growth by training leaders to address challenges facing Alabama, the southeast region and the nation
The two degrees offered by the school will include undergraduate + graduate degrees in Public Policy and in Leadershp.
Alabama will look to obtain approvals for the school and establish an organizational structure by summer 2026 before obtaining degree approval by spring 2027.
