We’re halfway to Mardi Gras—get into the spirit this weekend
Reading time: 2 minutes
We’re halfway to the good times rolling on the Gulf Coast. In just six short months, the coast will be packed with Mardi Gras revelers, catching parade throws, dressed to the nines for balls and some of the Coast’s best vibes.
If all that fun is six months away—why am I talking about it today? Well, we take Mardi Gras so seriously down here that we have a party just to mark the occasion that we’re midway to the real party.
The Halfway to Joe Cain Day Party is this weekend—and we have the details.
Who is Joe Cain?
For the uninitiated, Joe Cain is a Mardi Gras figure who’s unique and exclusive to Mobile. Mardi Gras legend has it that Cain paraded down the streets of a freshly antebellum Mobile to bring back some revelry to a defeated South—and we’ve been celebrating ever since.
Joe Cain was a real guy, but he paraded as the fictional Chief Slacabamarinico (Chief Slac), a figure still iconic to modern Mardi Gras celebrations.
In honor of Joe’s one-man procession, Mobile’s Mardi Gras has a whole day for him—the Sunday before Fat Tuesday is “Joe Cain Day” in the Port City—and even getting halfway there is cause for celebration.
