The idea of a pocket park overlooking the Coosa River in downtown Wetumpka was first revealed in 2022.

Three years later, that idea became a reality. The Fall Line Overlook officially opened at the end of April, providing residents and visitors of the small town a scenic stop with a quick educational experience.

“This project is much more than a viewing spot. It’s a place where locals and visitors can learn about Wetumpka’s geological features and cultural stories. It’s about strengthening Wetumpka’s unique character by creating a space that tells the city’s story through its mesmerizing landscapes and rich history.”

The spot is located between the Kelly Fitzpatrick Center for the Arts and Coaches Corner.

While you may just want to stop by to enjoy the view, there’s also some geographical, geological + historical significance to what you’re looking at from the top of the river bank.

The Fall Line includes a transition between two major geological regions with higher, older + more resistant crystalline rocks of the Piedmont region meeting the softer sedimentary layers of the coastal plain.

The Coosa River plays a role in that, experiencing a drop in elevation as it flows through the Fall Line + creating rapids which are popular for kayakers in the region.
