Have you heard the big news? HGTV is coming to Alabama! The small town of Wetumpka has been chosen by the Home Town Takeover crew to be the star of the very first season of the new show, and it airs today, Sunday, May 2nd. Wetumpka will receive a complete makeover in the most large-scale project HGTV has ever taken on. How cool is that? Well, we have found everything you need to know about this cool show before watching.

Since When?

Ben and Erin Napier have been killing the game on their HGTV show, Home Town, for 5 years now. They have been restoring and building up their very own hometown in Laurel, Mississippi. But, It looks like they were ready for a new (and bigger) project.

Last year, HGTV let people know they were looking for a candidate for this amazing opportunity. Thousands of towns applied on their website for the Home Town Takeover show. They had a very hard time choosing which small town to tackle with so many amazing options and places with a cool story. 2,600 small towns applied for the part, but only one could be so lucky.

On July 2nd, 2020, Wetumpka got the good news that they were the one town chosen by HGTV to get a complete renovation. Ben and Erin noticed all of the potential that the small town had and wanted to help them after the recent destruction from the 2019 tornadoes:

A devastating tornado hit Wetumpka recently, and on top of all of that they have so much community spirit. They love their city, and they want to revitalize it.”

What all is being done for the town?

Home Town Takeover is going to be a 6 part docu-series, where Ben and Erin will take on various parts of the town. The revitalization took place over 4 months and right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a great display of coming together to overcome hardship and create something great.

Here is what we know: there will be 12 major renovations done to the town of Wetumpka. Some of those projects will be restaurants, shops, and other public buildings for the entire town to enjoy. There will also be a heartwarming home renovation done for a local foster home. You can look forward to many exciting things, such as watching Sheryl Crow perform a street concert for the city.

You’ll just have to tune into the show yourself (later tonight) for the rest of the information!

Keep up to date with the show

A new episode of Home Town Takeover will play each coming Sunday at the same time (8/7 ct). The second episode will premier on Sunday, May 9th, and it is called “The Mayor is Also the Barber.”
