Dating back to an Act of Congress in 1879, Presidents’ Day was originally a federal holiday honoring President George Washington on his birthday, February 22. In 1971, the holiday was altered to be honored on the third Monday of February. Now, the holiday honors not only President Washington but all who have served as Presidents of the United States.

Fun Fact: In Alabama, the Presidents’ Day holiday is celebrated as “George Washington/Thomas Jefferson Birthday.”

What’s closed on Presidents’ Day?

As Presidents’ Day is a state and federal holiday, most city, county, federal, municipal and state offices will be closed on Monday, February 19. These include (but are not limited to):

  • U.S. Post Offices will be closed, and no mail service will run—except for Priority Mail Express.
  • Public Schools will be closed.
  • Garbage collection will take place on the following day, depending on local + county governments.
  • And more

In addition, some non-government organizations will be closed on Presidents’ Day, including many banks. Financial markets like the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ will be closed on Monday, as well.
