Where to make holiday food donations on the Gulf Coast
Reading time: 4 minutes
Not everyone has the access or means to celebrate the holiday season as we tend to envision it. Get in the festive spirit by donating food to those in need on the Gulf Coast this holiday season.
What are the benefits of donations?
Donating to organizations that fight food insecurity isn’t just a great way to spread the holiday cheer.
Organizing food drives with your local or preferred organization is a great way to bring the community together in support of those less fortunate. You can tap into your coworkers’ competitive spirits with a canned goods competition or simply fundraise for a local food bank in the name of a club, business or organization.
Under The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), most hunger relief organizations are able to purchase food products in bulk. This means that when someone donates money directly to an organization, that organization is able to purchase food at incredibly low rates. For example, Feeding the Gulf Coast turns a five-dollar donation into 25 meals!
Most donations are tax deductible.
If you don’t have the resources to donate directly, Amazon can donate for you. It’s as easy as just doing your Christmas shopping through Amazon Smile. All you have to do is set your charity to the hunger relief organization of your choice and make your purchases through the Amazon Smile website, and Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchases to your chosen charity.
The money and food items that are sent to these organizations help children, single parents, elders, homeless and potentially even someone you know from food insecurity. It’s one of the best ways to give back to the community.
Donate through Feeding the Gulf Coast
Feeding the Gulf Coast has been one of the largest hunger relief organizations in the area over the last 40 years. Last year alone, the organization was able to provide more than 33 million meals to families in need across three different states.
The Non-profit offers a plethora of ways for you to help. Good Samaritans can organize a food drive, volunteer and donate online. Non-perishable food donations that weigh less than 50 pounds can be dropped off at any Mobile Public Library.
