Your guide to tax-free back-to-school shopping in Alabama, July 19-21

School starts soon, but shoppers can save money this weekend during Alabama’s 19th annual back-to-school sales tax holiday.
The tax-free holiday will begin Friday, July 19 at 12:01 AM and end Sunday July 21 at midnight.

Eligible items
Shoppers have the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing free of state sales tax.
Clothing items $100 or less per article will be eligible.
Here are some of the items you can save on:
- Belts
- Shoes + socks
- Uniforms
- Shirts + dresses
- Diapers + underwear
- Hats + jackets
- Pajamas + robes
Non-eligible items include accessories, protective equipment and sports or recreational equipment.
Customers can also expect to save on books with a sales price of $30 or less per book, excluding newspapers and magazines.
Computer and software purchases with a sales price of $750 or less are also eligible, excluding cellphones.
These items include:
- Computer storage media
- Handheld electronic scheduler
- Personal digital assistants
- Computer printers
- Printing supplies
You can also save on the classic school and art supplies with a sales price of $50 or less per item, including:
- Book bags + lunchboxes
- Calculators, protractors + compasses
- Notebooks + index cards
- Folders + binders
- Crayons, markers, pencils, highlighters + pens
- Rulers + scissors
- Paint + paint brushes
- Erasers
- Glue
- Supply boxes
