2 AL Hotels among best in U.S.—vote now to make them #1
Reading time: 2 minutes
Once again, stars of Alabama culture are making it to the national headlines—the USA Today Reader’s Choice awards. The Grand Hotel in Point Clear and the GunRunner Hotel in Florence are up for “Best Historic Hotel” and “Best Boutique Hotel,” respectively.
We’ll dive into what USA Today editors said and how you can vote right now to make them number 1.
Best Historic Hotel – The Grand Hotel in Point Clear
Founded in 1847, The Grand has gone through many eras before it’s current status as one of the nicest hotels on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.
During the Civil War, the property was a hospital. Then, during World War II, the space was used as a training facility.
Since then, the property has lived out its “leisure years” as one of the premiere destinations on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Folks visit from far and wide to check out the ultra-lux spa, the top-notch golfing facilities or just for some respite by the water.
“Nowadays, guests are welcomed to rooms and suites with an air of timeless elegance and can enjoy special amenities like several on-site restaurants, a spa, and golfing. And don’t miss the daily firing of the cannon at the edge of Mobile Bay.”

Best Boutique Hotel – GunRunner Hotel in Florence
With 10 fabulous suites, each with its own unique theme, it’s no surprise that Florence’s GunRunner Hotel made the list of “best boutique hotels.”
There’s a Frank Lloyd Wright themed room, one styled after Alabama-based clothing designer Billy Reid and another that pays homage to The Shoals’ history of musical excellence. Seven of the rooms have a private balcony, too.
Outside your private suite, the hotel has a fully stocked bar, sitting smack dab in the middle of the 3,200-square-foot common area and lounge. And don’t forget the full-service med spa on property, offering facials, massages, nail care and more.
Voting closes on August 5—vote now.
