A bridge over Eightmile Creek in Cullman is set to get a makeover, according to Rep. Robert Aderholt.
The congressman said a $20.3 million grant has been secured to replace the bridge along Highway 278 + an additional $11 million from the House of Representatives. Those funds will be used to carry out the project as quickly as possible.

St. Bernard Bridge
The funding is expected to be used to replace and widen the St. Bernard Bridge located on Highway 278 between Cliff Road and St. Bernard Drive near the Ave Maria Grotto. The project would widen the approaches to the bridge and add pedestrian/biking lanes.
The 82-year-old bridge is listed as “requiring high priority of replacement” by the National Bridge Inventory. It is currently weight restricted and considered a safety hazard for motorists, according to Aderholt’s office.
The bridge currently experiences around 17,000 vehicles per day. Traffic is often an issue in the area and there is concern over the ability of first responders to pass over the bridge when traffic is stopped.
There is currently no timetable set for when construction will begin or when the bridge replacement would be completed.
