Reading time: 3 minutes
Get ready to eat! From fried green tomatoes to fresh-caught seafood, Alabamians know how to eat. That’s why we rounded up these seven iconic foods in Alabama you need to try.
1. Fried green tomatoes
No side dish encompasses down-home cooking quite like fried green tomatoes. We recommend trying this iconic Alabama food at The Irondale Cafe, where you can also enjoy southern fixins such as fried okra and sweet potato soufflé.
2. BBQ
Do you love BBQ? If so, you came to the right state. Alabama offers some of the best Q in the country. One of the things that makes it so iconic is in the sauce. Bama’s white BBQ sauce dressing is dangerously delicious. Check out Rusty’s Barbecue in Leeds for some great barbie.
3. Conecuh sausage
As an Alabamian, this may be my favorite food on the list. Made here at the Conecuh Sausage Co. in Evergreen Alabama, this seasoned sausage can be served a variety of ways, from breakfast meat to “conecuh dogs.” You can purchase Conecuh links at most Alabama grocery stores.
4. Moon pie
Craving a sweet treat? We have you covered. Packed with graham cracker and marshmallow filling, Alabama’s moon pies taste just like a smore. Plus, there are so many delicious flavor combinations, ranging from chocolate to banana. Like Conecuh sausage, you can find moon pies at most Alabama grocery stores, or at any Full Moon Bar-B-Que.
5. Banana pudding
Summer is almost here, and you’ll be happy to have some banana pudding. This chilled desert provides refreshment in the Alabama heat. Dreamland Bar-B-Que has some of the best.
6. Boiled peanuts
Enough about the sweets. If you’re a salty snack person, Alabama’s boiled peanuts will not disappoint. The Alabama Peanut Company serves all variety of boiled peanuts. From Alabama cajun to salt and vinegar, there are over 100 flavors that rotate daily.
7. Gulf Shrimp
If you want fresh seafood, try Alabama’s gulf shrimp. This state staple is imported straight from gulf shores and has a bold and delicious taste. You can find gulf shrimp at the grocery store or most local seafood restaurants.
