Airing Of The Quilts In Gee'S Bend
Years of history surround the quiltmaking in Gee’s Bend. (Airing of the Quilts)

Gee’s Bend, Alabama—a town with rich history surrounding Civil Rights—holds a festival each year to celebrate generations of African-American quiltmakers. Here’s what you need to know about this event’s history and details on how to attend.

History behind Gee’s Bend, Alabama

The residents of “The Bend” are direct descendants of the enslaved people who worked the cotton plantation established in 1816 by Joseph Gee, as stated by Souls Grown Deep.

After the Civil War and as part of Depression-era intervention, the Federal Government purchased 10K acres of the former plantation and enabled residents to acquire the land formerly worked by their ancestors. Cultural traditions like quilt making were sustained by these continuities.

The Airing of the Quilts Festival continues the tradition of outdoor quilt display in Gee’s Bend and allows visitors to explore the artistic community that stems from generations of African-American quilt makers.
