Girls’ flag football seems to be the fastest growing high school sport in the state of Alabama. It has even moved to the collegiate level!
Last season, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) had 113 teams competing for a state championship across two classifications. That was a 289% increase from the previous season.
But it wasn’t just about the quantity of teams—the quality was among the best in the country. Central-Phenix City was named the best high school girls flag football team in America by USA Today.
But soon, even more teams will be ready to compete with the Red Devils + the rest of the state in the chase for a blue map.
10 new high school programs

The Atlanta Falcons, in partnership with the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, is providing grants to 10 high school across the state. The funds will be used to set up new girls flag football programs for the 2025 season.
The recipients include:
- Alabama Christian Academy
- American Christian Academy
- Athens High School
- Chickasaw High School
- Elmore County High School
- I3 Academy High School
- Linden High School
- Saraland High School
- St. John Paul II High School
- Talladega High School
These additions will put the AHSAA at more than 130 schools competing.
The foundation along with the Falcons organization have played an important role in growing flag football across Alabama. They helped launch a pilot program in 2021, leading to Alabama becoming just the eighth state to sanction girls flag football as an official high school sport by 2024.
The Falcons also recently hosted a flag football clinic at Legion Field in Birmingham.
