It’s only March but it has already been an exciting year for the Noccalula Falls Park zoo. Two new kangaroos were added (and named!) earlier this year and now the park has welcomed a baby sloth along with adding a toucan to the mix!

The city said the sloth was born last week and is being attended to by veterinarians and park staff to ensure the baby and mother are cared for and remain healthy.

Continued improvements at the park

The additions are a part of the Park’s ongoing efforts to expand the petting zoo and animal habitat that were impacted by a devastating fire in 2021.

“For more than a year, we’ve been working to add some animals that aren’t found easily in northeast Alabama. We have a pair of kangaroos, Chief and Lula; a coatimundi; monkeys; and last fall, we added a pair of sloths. We love to have families visit Noccalula Falls Park, and it’s an educational experience to see these animals and learn about them firsthand.”

Construction continues on the park’s new barn, which will house some animal habitats and an area for educational programs. The building is expected to be completed this fall.

The park is also undergoing an $11 million project on its campground which will include improvements on:

  • Internal roads, parking lots and RV spots
  • Utility services
  • Bathhouses
  • Landscaping upgrades
  • New zero-entry swimming pool + large pavilion
  • New administrative office
  • New gateway signage

What else is going on?

It’s almost time for the Etowah County School System’s spring break. The city of Gadsden is encouraging people to spend their time outdoors, offering discounts on the park’s mini-golf course with extended hours for the week.

Other events include the Smoke on the Falls BBQ Competition and the Art on the Rocks arts and crafts show.
