For the second time in the last three seasons, the Birmingham-Southern College baseball team is moving on to the NCAA Division III Super Regional round. Except this one may mean a little something more to the players, the alumni and the college’s community.

Earlier this year, the college announced it would be closing its doors for good, ceasing operations at the end of May. But the Panthers have a chance to play beyond that date, with just two more wins separating them from their second ever appearance in the DIII College World Series.

Keep reading to find out more about the team’s path to get here + find out how you can keep up with their games this weekend.

Birmingham-Southern closed the regular season on a 9-game winning streak but lost two straight games on its home field during the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament. That didn’t stall the team’s momentum before the regional round.

The Panther got the #3 seed in the Lexington Region, only to take down the two teams in front of them and finish the weekend with an unbeaten record. Here’s how they did it:

  • #3 BSC 21, #2 Transylvania (host) 7
  • #3 BSC 4, #1 Spalding 2
  • #3 BSC 5, #2 Transylvania 2

That third win secured the Panthers’ spot in the Super Regional. Up next is a trip to Granville, Ohio to face the #2 overall seed in the country: Denison. Here’s a quick comparison of the two teams:

  • Birmingham-Southern College
  • 2024 Record: 30-14
  • Super Regional appearances: 2
  • CWS appearances: 1 (Runner-up in 2019)
  • #2 Denison University
  • 2024 Record: 42-6
  • Super Regional appearances: First
  • CWS appearances: 0

This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams—with a spot in the College World Series on the line. Here’s the schedule for the best-of-3 series this weekend:

  • Game 1: Friday, May 24, 12PM
  • Game 2: Saturday, May 25, 11:30PM
  • Game 3: Sunday, May 26, 2:30PM (if necessary)

All games are set to stream online on the North Coast Network.

What happens if BSC keeps winning?

This team has already made some national headlines just by winning the regional. If Birmingham-Southern College can take 2-of-3 games against Denison, the spotlight will only grow bigger.

Two wins would send the Panthers back to the Division III College World Series, an 8-team, double elimination tournament that begins in Ohio on May 31—the same day of Birmingham-Southern College’s closing.

That means if the Panthers make it that far, they could be playing for a college that no longer exists. They would be guaranteed at least two games but a few more victories there could help the program claim its first ever national championship in its final game ever.
