What you’ll find during the surplus auction

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) hosts this special auction several times per year. Since 2019, they’ve transitioned to an online bidding format so that users across the state will be able to view the items from wherever they’re at. Want to see a few examples of items that are up for bid?

  • Ambulances + fire trucks
  • Office furniture
  • Audio/visual equipment
  • Industrial equipment
  • Cafeteria equipment
  • Tanks
  • Networking and wireless devices
  • Confiscated/forfeited/recovered property

Quite a unique mix of items coming from someone who never really knew where one bought a tank. That being said, if you have a need for something, the state of Alabama probably has it.

If you’ve been wondering where these items have come from, then you’ve come to the right place. They not only source from the state and federal agencies’ goods, but from several airports in the Southeast that have items that are abandoned voluntarily. This surplus auction is a great way for them to make way for new inventory—kind of like their version of Spring cleaning.

Their most recent surplus auction was hosted from September 2-8 of 2021, so they’ll have fresh, new items for you to check out.

How do I start bidding?

There are a few steps to take before actually getting in on the fun of recieving your items. In order to start bidding, you first:

  1. Register as a GovDeals bidder. This is a quick process, but is crucial. You can access the registration form from their website to get started.
  2. Bid on your items and win! Payment will be taken online.
  3. Not sure about the pictures you’re seeing online? Head to the surplus warehouse in Montgomery on January 21 from 8AM-3PM to see them in person.

It’s that easy. Want to shop these sales year round? Municipal and county governments, State agencies and qualified nonprofit organizations can shop at any time—truly a game changer for these businesses.
