What to know about the new Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge in Gulf Shores
Reading time: 2 minutes
Construction of a third southbound lane on Highway 59 in Gulf Shores has made the city much less walkable, but a new project aims at fixing that problem.
Construction is expected to begin this year on a new Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge connecting the north and south sides of the Waterway District.
When will the new pedestrian bridge be completed?
The new Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge is a component of the BUILD Grant Project, and will connect the north and south sides of the Waterway District through newly constructed pedestrian pathways spanning from the new Medical Village area to East 20th Avenue.
The bridge will be equipped ADA approved ramps built at an appropriate slope for biking and walking and an elevator.
Although construction was supposed to have started last summer, city officials expect it to begin this year.
The pedestrian bridge timeline
Gulf Shores city officials say the bridge project, which was approved nearly two years ago, has fallen a year behind because the project came in at $20 million over budget.
A revamped design is in the works that would be more cost-efficient and will be re-bid this year.
