SNEAK PEEK: Renderings of the new Alabama State House

The Alabama Legislature is one step closer to getting a new home.
Last week, the Secretary of the Senate, Clerk of the House and Secretary of the Legislative Council told legislators that the initial phases of construction for the five story new State House are underway. Foundation work at the site is expected to begin after the new year.
Alabama’s temporary State House
The current State House on Union Street, which sits directly across from the State Capitol and grounds, is known for being cramped and not friendly to visitors. Formerly the site of the Alabama Highway Department, the legislature moved into the building in the mid-80s as a temporary fix when the State Capitol was renovated.
They never moved back.
Where is the new State House going?
The new State House will replace a parking lot that was used by the legislature across Ripley Street, directly behind the current State House.
According to the renderings there will be large committee rooms to enable the public to comfortably witness proceedings and participate in meetings. A 200+ space underground parking garage will be built. The new site will also have a pavilion and greenspace for people to gather.
Who is paying for the State House?
The construction process and financing of the State House will be done via the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
